I watered my backyard flowerbeds after work tonight and made a point of actually getting down on my hands and knees on the deck to give one of my plants an extra good drink as some bleeding heart plants at the back of the bed have gone "crazy" and were growing over top of that plant (whose name escapes me for the moment). I noticed that some lily of the valley had been eaten down to the stem and actually came in and looked online to ensure they aren't toxic to pets (was pretty sure they weren't as when I originally put in the perennials I was very careful about that as Buster was just a pup). We came in, had dinner and went back to the deck.........and I WAS PISSED, in that couple of hours something had been back in the beds and ate all the tops off some plants that were just ready to explode in colour, day lillies, daisies, etc. I must have a "critter" back in those crazy bleeding hearts that are going crazy and when I watered, it must have awoken and gone on a feeding frenzy. It was gone then, but most of that flower bed has been literally destroyed as it ate all of the stems of blooms ready to burst! I wasn't sure what to do, so I spread hot pepper flakes in the bed and cayenne on the plants but with so much rain lately and me about to leave to go on the road for the week again, will I lose everything while I'm gone?. Anyone with a green thumb and some tips please help. I worry about what I put out there....I want a deterrent, but not something that will harm an animal, I figure I have a bunny there and my dog Buster is no deterrent - more of a friendly playmate if he spots one. I also have to be sure whatever I put there won't harm the B-boy in the event he loses all sense of "mommy will be pissed if I go in there" and does.....he never does, but just in case.
